Psych Seen presented as part of the Cutler and Gross Visionaires series in Los Angeles (June 22 – July 9, 2017) and New York (June 28 – July 5, 2017), Art curator Janet Levy selected two artists for the curatorial project she titled Psych Seen, Levy chose Ariana Papademetropoulos for Los Angeles and Anne Vieux for New York both artists challenging the subjects of perception and illusion through their work.

About the Curator, Janet Levy

Janet Levy is an artist and independent curator. A Los Angeles native with New York heritage, Levy was immersed in the arts from an early age and went on to earn a photography degree and later study sculpture at the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel. In 1996, Levy launched her curatorial practice with an exhibition in Luzurn, Switzerland. She has since presented over 40 extraordinary exhibitions and projects in her native Los Angeles and around the country. In 2006, she opened See Line Gallery in Santa Monica, later moving to the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. In 2014, See Line evolved into Janet Levy Projects as a way to adapt her experience to a flexible curatorial platform.

At the intersection of curatorial and artistic practice, Levy has created a singular approach within the contemporary art communities of Los Angeles and beyond. Through a combination of an intuitive, respectful understanding for the art making process and a keen, discerning eye, she has successfully played a major role in launching the careers of many emerging artists while having produced innovative programming over the last 20 years. Levy has been awarded the FUKA-fonds grant from the Culture Department, City of Lucerne, the Arts Council Canton of Obwalden, Switzerland. Her work resides in collections around the world and has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Zurich, Lucerne and New Orleans. Janet Levy currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Ariana Papademetropoulos, The man who saved the neighbor’s dog from an imaginary fire Cutler and Gross, 8505 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, 90069

June 22 - July 9, 2017

Ariana Papademetropoulos presenting new paintings exploring the hidden layers within traditional domesticity. The work plays with perception - what we see or expect is either reversed or revealed. Two paintings “Cry, Baby” and “Lucifer was Tall” are taken from titles of gothic romance paperback novels. Lastly, a large painting of a nude woman double exposed with Papademetropoulos’ mother’s childhood bedroom hangs.

Anne Vieux, Interference
Cutler and Gross, 110 Mercer St, New York, 10012

June 28 -July 5, 2017

Anne Vieux presenting an installation exploring the idea of unconscious interference, described as an involuntary, pre-rational and reflex-like mechanism which is part of the formation of visual impressions. Material shifts occur throughout the installation to create a platform for a mediated experience of captured light, form and the subject of perception. The exhibition includes a looping video displayed on a screen, velvet linings, a painting and a lenticular print. In each material parameters are applied and twisted, ultimately misusing materials to transform existing imagery inextricably from its original form. Repetition threads the works together with Vieux’ seductive and unique approach to materials.
